If you are an avid hiker and are growing tired of the mountainous trails you’re used to hiking, try something different; like the desert. The Grand Canyon in Arizona would make for a nice change of scenery with spectacular views of the canyon in its desert backdrop. Definitely something to try at least once; but if you are considering a Grand Canyon hiking trip, you will need to prepare for it.

Here are some simple tips and advice for planning a Grand Canyon hiking trip:

Strenuous Hikes

Unlike mountain trails, trails within the Grand Canyon are steeper. They go downhill then quickly climb steeply uphill. The average speed that a hiker must expect is at least one mile per hour. Most trails within the Grand Canyon take at least 8 hours round trip to complete.

Harsh Weather

One thing to expect on a Grand Canyon hiking trip is the unforgivable weather that the desert terrain brings forth. During the summer, rains could be heavy, and nights could be extremely cold. During the daytime, the heat definitely will take a toll on any hiker, no matter what level of experience. So if you are considering this adventure, be prepared for any type of weather.

Stay Hydrated!

One of the most obvious things you are taught when hiking anywhere. Drink plenty of water and stay nourished! This is especially important on your Grand Canyon hiking trip. Experts suggest you drink at least one gallon of water a day to balance out the water being lost in sweat and urination, and up to two quarts when hiking up hill in direct sunlight. You should not wait until you are thirsty to drink water, as it is a sign you may be dehydrated. Along with drinking water, you need to make sure that you replace lost electrolytes with food, to keep your body fueled properly.

Be Smart

One very important thing to keep in mind before going on your Grand Canyon hiking trip is that you need to let your friends and family know where exactly you are going, when you might be back. This is needed for any hiking excursion, but in the event that something happens, people will know where to find you. Avoid hiking the Grand Canyon alone, especially if it’s your first time there.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most beautiful sites in this country. If you love the outdoors, then planning a trip to the Canyon is definitely something you should do in your lifetime. But along with the beauty, comes potential danger. The best way to keep yourself safe is to take care of your health while hiking, be conscious of the shifting weather patterns, and let people know what you are doing.
